BurtonHamfelt Urban Architecture is an innovative, design-driven practice that explores new solutions to the challenges of a rapidly urbanising and data-informed world. Founded in Amsterdam, the studio operates at the intersection of architecture, urban design, and landscape planning, combining conceptual imagination with technical precision to create projects that are visionary, pragmatic, and socially meaningful.

We specialise in high-density mixed-use housing, educational and campus environments, and resilient urban planning concepts. Our strength lies in transforming complex or overlooked sites—turning conflicting urban conditions into coherent, sustainable, and people-centred places. Every project begins with a deep understanding of context and evolves through a strategic, collaborative design process that links innovation with social value while balancing development potential for financial feasibility.

Our portfolio includes mixed-use residential buildings, educational facilities, and large-scale masterplans. Current work includes the Sluisbuurt Urban Plan in Amsterdam—a model for vertical living and climate-adaptive urbanism—the HODO mixed-use towers in Amsterdamse Poort, and the Urban Ivy development in Klaprozenbuurt, redefining collective housing. The Optopper modular timber system explores circular strategies for densifying post-war neighbourhoods into Paris Proof buildings.

At every scale, we place the client’s ambition and public value at the centre of our work. We collaborate closely with municipalities, developers, and future residents to co-create projects that are inclusive, adaptable, and forward-looking, ensuring that design excellence is always paired with social and environmental responsibility.

TEAM

At BurtonHamfelt Urban Architecture, our team is a compact and diverse group of architects, designers, and technicians driven by a shared ambition to create architecture that makes a difference. We combine creativity, technical precision, and curiosity to explore how design can respond intelligently to the challenges of the contemporary city.

We deliberately operate as a lean, focused studio, working on a few projects at a time. This allows us to concentrate fully, test ideas collaboratively, and maintain a high level of design quality and personal involvement throughout the process.

Our expertise in BIM and parametric design software—including Revit, Rhino, Grasshopper, and other advanced digital tools—enables us to connect concept and construction seamlessly. These methods allow for complex modelling, performance testing, and data-driven design that supports innovation and sustainability.

With team members from a variety of international and interdisciplinary backgrounds, we bring a wide range of perspectives to every project. Together, we form a hands-on, inventive group committed to producing thoughtful, resilient, and future-oriented architecture.
